Bed, Breakfast and Birding in the Boreal

Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B Birding Tour Packages in the boreal woods of Superior National Forest. Bird watchers will find an astonishing variety of birds unique to the boreal forest around Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B and in the burned over Ham Lake fire area located near the B&B. The American Birding Conservancy has heralded Superior National Forest as one of 100 "Globally Important Birding Areas". With one hundred and fifty-five nesting species of birds, the Superior Forest has the greatest number of breeding birds of any National Forest in the country.

With Birding Guide- Two Night Package for two people includes- Barbara's famous full breakfast each morning, services of a birding guide for one morning, followed by lunch at one of the Gunflint Trail's favorite restaurants: Trail Center. Free use of two birding kits (equipped with binoculars, birding area maps, and a bird book) during your stay.

Bed, Breakfast and Canoe

Stay overnight in Dorothy's room at the Guesthouse and after breakfast the next day, canoe with an experienced guide to one of the Boundary Water's most spectacular areas- the Stairway Portage and waterfalls of Rose Lake. Return to the Guesthouse that afternoon for another night. Package includes two nights lodging with breakfast, canoe and guide and trail lunch.

Inn to Inn Canoeing

Spend the night in Dorothy's room at Poplar Creek Guesthouse. After breakfast, canoe from Little Ollie Lake to Old Northwoods Lodge on Poplar Lake where you will spend the night. Canoeing distance varies with route. The most direct route is about three miles. On the longest route, you paddle six miles through the Boundary Waters and travel across four portages. The trip includes two nights lodging, breakfast two days, trail lunch one day, one canoe with paddles and life vests and car/gear shuttle between accommodations.

Inn to Inn Hiking

Two nights, one day hike: Hike between two Bed and Breakfasts through the Boundary Waters. Choose a five or nine mile hike. Includes breakfast two mornings, trail lunch one day and car/luggage shuttle.

Rate: $135/person

Room upgrade available at $10 per person.

Three nights, two day hike: Hike between three Bed and Breakfasts. Hike first day through the Boundary Waters. Next day hike over spectacular Clearwater Highlands Trail. Choose five or nine mile hike one day and six mile hike other day. Includes breakfast three mornings, trail lunches two days and car/luggage shuttles. **Upgrades available.

Inn to Inn Around the BWCA--Ely to the Gunflint Trail

Scenic Drive Around the BWCA--Ely to the Gunflint Trail by "the secret backroads" with Two Exceptional B & B's as Bookends--(Trip available from May though end of October).

Spend two nights at Ely's Blue Heron Bed and Breakfast, located on South Farm Lake at the Western Gateway to the Boundary Waters. Canoe, hike or mountain bike right from the B & B during your stay. Then drive from Ely to the Gunflint Trail along the southern border of the BWCA via the scenic backroads--known by locals and driven by few others. Picnic beside a remote picturesque lake or creek enroute. Be sure to watch for moose along the way. On the Gunflint Trail, the eastern Gateway to the Boundary Waters, spend two nights at Poplar Creek Guesthouse B & B. While on the Gunflint hike-in to the overlook at Honeymoon Rock, mountain bike, canoe. Finally on your way home you travel along the incredibly beautiful North Shore Drive of Lake Superior--a National Scenic Byway.

Seasonal Highlights: Spring--Trees bursting with new leaves and tiny forest flowers beneath your feet. Fast moving creeks and rivers and splashing waterfalls. Summer--Warmer weather and a time for a refreshing swim in a wilderness lake and a time to pick berries. In July wild strawberries arrive followed in August by raspberries and blueberries. Late summer is also when you are likely to see a cow moose with her calf. Autumn--The leaf color season runs from mid September through mid October, but varies in timing in different areas of the forest and along Lake Superior. The autumn Boundary Waters colors are spectacular!
